The tales about Papillon Hall still pervade the tiny village of Lubenham despite the hall being demolished
in 1950. The Papillon family came to England from France in 1588 and David Papillon built the hall
in the early 1600's in a fortified octagonal shape, complete with a moat and a mile long secret tunnel!
It wasn't until the hall was inherited by his Great-Great Grandson that strange things started to occur.
This Grandson was also named David and locals nick-named him 'Pamps'. According to locals, he had
the ability to hypnotically transfix people to the spot and was rumoured to have rendered a burglar
immobile with this 'evil eye'. Pamps had a Spanish mistress who mysteriously dissappeared around
1715 but curiously, a woman's skeleton was discovered in 1903 in a bricked-up room known as
'Pamps attic'.
Another story connected with the Spanish mistress involved a pair of shoes that apparently caused
strange things to occur whenever they were removed from the hall - bangings, tappings and furniture
being moved around! Even worse, patrons were killed or injured when the shoes were taken away
for any period of time and it was eventually written into the contract of sale that these shoes must
remainat the hall, going so far as to build a special wall-mounted box for them!
A portrait of Pamps, painted in 1715 disturbed servants and relatives because of its 'evil influence' and
sightings of a ghostly figure exactly like the image in the painting encouraged the family to remove it.
Details of these tales can be found in the upcoming book (they do not feature in the dvd.)
